Common Physical Therapy Equipment and Supply Terms

Physical therapy is a health care specialty that focuses on treating ailments involving the muscular system. Whether someone has become injured in an accident or recovering from surgery, physical therapists will help them regain strength and range of motion. In order to rehab effectively, physical therapist will need the proper equipment and supplies in their offices. Equipment will range from weights to massage tables and stimulation devices. During rehab, patients will need to exercise and stretch to improve their physical condition. While rehab may involve common exercises like a treadmill or bike, activity will be closely monitored by a therapist.

  • Acupressure - Acupressure is a technique that uses massaging principles on key points on the body. When massaged or pressed, this technique will release muscular tension and promote circulation in the body.
  • Resistance Training - Resistance training involves the use of weights, machines and other heavy objects to improve strength in a certain part of the body.
  • Medicine Ball - A medicine ball is a weighted ball that is used in resistance training. These exercises are commonly used to improve someone's core.
  • Regimen - A regimen is a nutrition and exercise program and plan that is outlined by a physical therapist to help patients recover from their ailment.
  • Aquatic Therapy - Aquatic therapy is rehab that is conducted in a pool. Water helps a patient improve their range of motion because of its resistance properties.
  • Electrical Stimulation - Electrical stimulation involves a device that produces high voltage beams in order to reduce inflammation and increase circulation.
  • Deep Tissue Massage - A deep tissue massage is designed to reduce tension in the deeper musculature region. Therapists will have patients lie down on a massage table and use techniques to bypass the surface muscles and reach this layer in the body.

Physical therapy equipment distributors sell different types of products to rehab facilities and retail stores. These clients often want to purchase bulk orders of supplies such as orthopedic inserts, portable massage tables, and exercise balls. The bulk discount companies offer their clients discounted prices on new and used physical therapy equipment when they place bulk orders. Often, clients can get a cheaper price per unit by purchasing a larger order. Although physical therapy equipment distributors should have a wide range of products for sale, not all of them keep the same supplies in stock. Some of the companies, for instance, focus on exercise products such as resistance machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, and pool products. This allows their clients to purchase all of the gym that they need for their patients. Other bulk distributors, however, might focus on medical products that are used in clinics. You can often determine what types of massage tables, exercise equipment, chiropractic supplies, and other products that a bulk discount supplier has by accessing their web pages. If you do not know which companies serve your area, then you can use a popular search engine to locate their web sites. Most companies will have online catalogs that make it easy for you to browse their products. You can also learn more about the companies in your region by searching for forums where other rehab clinics and supply stores post reviews of the companies that they have bought equipment from. This gives you first hand information about which companies have good manufacturer connections, customer services, and price value.
