Terms to Know About Pianos

Learning to play the piano can be rewarding, educational and fun for both adults and children. Playing piano teaches discipline, improves math skills and builds a lifetime appreciation for music and instruments. Here are some terms to know if you are interested in signing up for piano lessons, buying a piano or servicing your current piano.

  • Upright – An upright piano features a rectangular back with strings that run vertical. These pianos fit well in smaller locations and are ideal for people just starting lessons.
  • Grand – The strings of a grand piano run horizontal. Grand pianos typically have longer strings than uprights and therefore have a more desirable sound.
  • Keyboard – A keyboard is an electric piano. Keyboards are lighter, easier to move and do not have to be tuned. they are typically used by working musicians despite the fact the sound quality does not typically stand up to a real piano.
  • Strings – The sound a piano makes comes from the strings which vibrate inside the instrument. Piano strings are arranged in thin to thicker sizes to produce the many different notes of the piano.
  • Hammer – The hammer is a small felt-covered mallet that hits the piano strings to make them vibrate when a key is hit.
  • Soundboard – The soundboard is the box of wood surrounding the strings which amplifies the sound of the notes. If you purchase a used piano it is important to check that there are no cracks in the soundboard.
  • Touch – The term touch refers to how a piano’s keys feel when touched and played. Musicians have their own preferences for key touch however everyone should look for an even touch when purchasing a piano.
