Plant Shop Terminology

Buying plants, whether you buy seeds or flowers, can be a tricky business. You don't need to be a horticulturalist or a botanist to navigate your way through the world of plants and shrubs, however. A few important terms in the industry will have you shopping at your nearest nursery or greenhouse with ease. Plant shops and florists come in all types. Depending on what kind of herb you're looking for, you'll have to pick the right shop. Some florists sell vegetable seeds and tree saplings for vast gardens. Other shops prepare extravagant bouquets made of hibiscus and roses for home delivery. Whatever plant or shrub you are looking for, first familiarize yourself with this vocabulary.

  • Root Ball - This is the ideal way to purchase a tree or shrub. The plant will come with a small ball of loose roots, usually kept in water or a hydroponic solution fro easy transfer and planting.
  • Greenhouse - A type of indoor growing structure for nurturing plants and herbs. A greenhouse can be either three season or four season. Four season greenhouses are heated and can grow plants in the winter. Three season models only operate in fall, spring and summer.
  • Succulent - This is a type of native desert plant. The cactus is the most familiar succulent. California native gardens are known for diverse cactus arrangements.
  • Organic - Grown without pesticide sprays. Other, natural pest control methods are utilized such as crop rotation, compost and biological pest control.
  • Bulb - A common type of plant purchased from a florist in a nursery. If you want to buy tulips for your garden, they will come in the form of a bulb. Other flowers like hibiscus are generally planted as seeds.

Many gardens feature plants, along with flowers, shrubs, and trees. Green thumbs typically get their plants and other garden accessories at a plant shop, nursery, farm, garden center, or greenhouse. Gardening is a seasonal hobby, one that requires a love of flowers and the outdoors. Retail plant shops sell items like pots, soil, fertilizer, herbs, and pest sprays. Employees can advise customers on the best shrubs and flowers to plant during the spring, summer, and fall. People can also get detailed instructions online regarding gardening tips, indoor garden tending, and organic pesticides that are better for the environment. Roses are always a favorite for gardeners, but there are other plant varieties that make for a beautiful sight, such as acacia trees, African violets, bayberry shrubs, and blueberry bushes. Popular plants may vary year to year but plant shops typically stock a broad spectrum of indoor and outdoor plants that are consistent favorites. Some plant shops are located within large home improvement stores, while others are stand-alone entities. Customers may buy plants and flowers to improve the look of their front yard or backyard landscape. Business owners also buy from retailers, as do contractors and gardeners. Some purchase bulk items from wholesale centers when they need a large quantity of plants at once. Consumers can head to the Internet to get local listings of plant shops ad nursery stores. They can also get tips and tricks online, or take out books from the library. Asking for recommendations at a plant store or nursery is also a good idea.
