Definitions of Plastic Machinery and Equipment
The following terms are often used when buying or selling plastic machinery and equipment:
Extruder: A machine that takes raw plastic and melts it down to create long plastic films. Extruders work by adding raw thermoplastic beads into the machine through a hopper. The plastic is melted down and turned by using a large screw. The length of the screw determines how wide the plastic film will be. Extruders are used to produce films, coating, and tubing.
Injection Molders: A machine that forms plastic into shapes by using molding. The plastic is injected in its liquid form into a mold, where it is heated and then cooled. The plastic takes the shape of the mold it is injected into. These machines are used for shaping everything from hair rollers to children’s toys.
Thermoformers: A machine that forms plastic in the shape of a mold. Unlike injection molders, thermoformers heat a strip of plastic until it softens, then place it over a mold using a vacuum. The vacuum forces the plastic to take the shape of the mold. Thermorformers are most commonly used in the food industry, producing plastic cups, utensils, and plates.
Blow Molders: A machine that can create hollow plastic parts. The raw plastic is attached to a tube and heated until it is pliable. Then compressed air is shot through the tube, expanding the plastic and creating an empty area inside. The plastic will take the shape of the mold it is blown into. Plastic bottles are by far the most common objects produced through blow molders.
