Important Terms to Know About Plastics Molders
Plastics molders form plastic into molds to be used for various purposes. This process may also be referred to as plastics extrusion, designed for high-volume manufacturing processes. Plastics Extrusion: High volume manufacturing process where raw plastic is melted, then formed into anything from pipes and tubing to weather stripping and fencing. It can also be used to make deck railings, plastic films, coatings and wire insulation.

Polymer: A large molecule made up of repeating structural units, bound by covalent chemical bonds. Many people refer to polymers as plastics, although the term covers many compounds of natural and synthetic nature.

Thermoforming: Plastic production process designed for thin and heavy gauge plastic applications. This involves a vacuum pulling a sheet of plastic over a heated mold, which then cools and helps to separate the plastic from the mold.

Hot Stamping: A process used when a stamp is applied for decoration or function. This occurs on the plastic material while it is still hot.

Thermal Insulation: The reduction in heat transfer between objects near radiative components. This term refers to the maintenance of a temperature gradient through insulation where heat flow is reduced.
