Important Plumbing Terms

Plumbing contractors use a lot of lingo that can be confusing unless you know the terms they are using. This can be helpful the next time you need commercial, residential, or industrial repairs. Here are a few key terms to help you understand their unique language.

  • Fixture - In the world of plumbing, any object that supplies water is referred to as a fixture. This includes kitchen sinks, toilets, and bathtubs.
  • Plumber's Putty - Plumbers use this epoxy to create a tight seal between joints.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) - The name for industrial plastic pipe often used in drainage systems with no pressure. Usually white in color.
  • Stop Valve - The valve underneath a sink or toilet used to shut off the water in the event of a leak or overflow.
  • Service Entrance - The juncture where the water company's pipes connect to the electric water meter.
  • Trap - A trap is a downward bend in the plumbing below the sink which traps water and prevents sewer gasses from leaking into your home.
  • Soil Stack - A large pipe installed straight up or down a local building, collecting waste bound for the sewer.
  • Backup - Plumbing contractors use this term for the overflow that results from a clogged sink or toilet.
  • Peak Demand - Peak demand is the time of the day when the hot water heater in a house, apartment, or office is used the most.
  • Plunger - A plunger is a cheap tool usually used to unclog bathroom toilets. It is made of a rod attached to a rubber head, which creates suction to remove whatever is clogging the pipe.

Plumbing contractors install pipes for new construction. Plumbers also fix pipes for existing buildings. Plumbers are hired for home remodeling most often for kitchens and bathrooms. Most customers want cheap prices but a licensed, dependable plumbing contractor. Some plumbers only fix drains and do repairs for commercial clients. Other plumbing technicians only install toilets and sinks for industrial customers. Some services take care of electric tasks such as heat repair for air conditioning units. Count on a trained plumber to arrive quickly and stop a leak. Your local plumber should be able to solve a sewer problem at a reasonable fee. Reliable companies can replace fixtures and order parts in a short time.
