Important Terms Related to Ponds and Pond Supplies

  • pH - A measure of how acidic or basic something is; The scale ranges from 1 to 14, with the strongest acids at the low end and the strongest bases at the high end. Deionized water has a pH of 7, making it neutral. With a pond, you will need to control the pH of the water using chemicals to prevent the growth of bacteria and keep your fish healthy.
  • Algae - Organism that grows in water that may be green, yellow, red, brown or black in color; Algae often grows in ponds. Though it is not dangerous or harmful, it can make it difficult to see the fish, leading most pond-owners to remove it.
