Vaporized diacetyl can damage the bronchioles over time, leading to irreversible health problems. People who microwave popcorn daily or work at a concession stand that uses artificial butter are at a higher risk for developing popcorn lung. Diacetyl-free microwave popcorn is available for concerned consumers.
  • Coconut Oil - Coconut oil is one of the most popular fats used to make popcorn. Often used in movie theaters, it yields tasty popcorn that is very high in fat.
  • Kettle Corn - Kettle corn uses sugar and salt to give the popcorn its distinctive flavor. It was once made in cast iron kettles and in some places, like fairs and carnivals, still is made this way.
