Important Popcorn and Popcorn Supply Terms

If you're a popcorn lover, you probably know you can make popcorn with only a few supplies. Popcorn is used by heating a certain type of dried corn with a very high moisture content. Using other types of corn could yield undesirable results. However, understanding a few popcorn terms will help you pick the best equipment for the job.

  • Hot Air Popcorn Maker - This machine pops popcorn without using oil or fat. This method supplies popcorn that has only five percent of its calories derived from fat.
  • Commercial Popcorn Machine - These machines are used by concession stands to make large amounts of popcorn. Many commercial popcorn makers are highly decorative to entice potential customers.
  • Diacetyl - This naturally occurring chemical is used to create artificial butter flavoring. It can also be found in cheese, beer, and wine. The presence of diacetyl has been associated with a faint caramel odor. Caramel popcorn may also contain some diacetyl.
  • Popcorn Lung - Regularly inhaling freshly popped popcorn that contains artificial flavoring can cause a condition called popcorn lung. Vaporized diacetyl can damage the bronchioles over time, leading to irreversible health problems. People who microwave popcorn daily or work at a concession stand that uses artificial butter are at a higher risk for developing popcorn lung. Diacetyl-free microwave popcorn is available for concerned consumers.
  • Coconut Oil - Coconut oil is one of the most popular fats used to make popcorn. Often used in movie theaters, it yields tasty popcorn that is very high in fat.
  • Kettle Corn - Kettle corn uses sugar and salt to give the popcorn its distinctive flavor. It was once made in cast iron kettles and in some places, like fairs and carnivals, still is made this way.

Popcorn is the perfect complement to a movie, whether you’re watching it on the big screen at the theater or in your own living room. You’ll need the proper supplies to pop your own corn if doing it at home, unless you plan on going the easy route and popping a bag in the microwave. Movie theaters need supplies on a larger scale, from kettles and oil to cheese and popcorn maker machines. You can add flavorings to your popcorn, plus salt and even sugar. Movie theaters aren’t the only places you’ll find popcorn in bulk quantities. Head to a carnival or fair and you’ll see plenty of caramel popcorn balls and kettle corn for sale. Movie theater concession stands buy in bulk from popcorn supplies dealers. They may purchase large quantities of caramel, kernels, butter and oil. These same dealers also sell to retailers, with products ranging from colored popcorn balls to decorative tins filled with sweet and salty varieties. If you enjoy eating this snack at home quickly and easily, then pick up a box of microwave popcorn bags which are available in a variety of flavors. You can also grab a bag of kernels for your air popper and some seasonings to experiment with different flavor combinations. Popcorn pops when it gets hot after repeated exposure to heat, either in a kettle, over the stove, in a popcorn maker machine or in the microwave. Popcorn is a popular treat for children and adults alike. Buttered popcorn is no doubt a favorite among many, but there are many recipes available to make sweet and savory popcorn snacks.
