Important Popcorn and Popcorn Supply Terms

If you're a popcorn lover, you probably know you can make popcorn with only a few supplies. Popcorn is used by heating a certain type of dried corn with a very high moisture content. Using other types of corn could yield undesirable results. However, understanding a few popcorn terms will help you pick the best equipment for the job.

  • Hot Air Popcorn Maker - This machine pops popcorn without using oil or fat. This method supplies popcorn that has only five percent of its calories derived from fat.

  • Diacetyl - This naturally occurring chemical is used to create artificial butter flavoring. It can also be found in cheese, beer, and wine. The presence of diacetyl has been associated with a faint caramel odor. Caramel popcorn may also contain some diacetyl.
  • Popcorn Lung - Regularly inhaling freshly popped popcorn that contains artificial flavoring can cause a condition called popcorn lung. Vaporized diacetyl can damage the bronchioles over time, leading to irreversible health problems. People who microwave popcorn daily or work at a concession stand that uses artificial butter are at a higher risk for developing popcorn lung. Diacetyl-free microwave popcorn is available for concerned consumers.
  • Coconut Oil - Coconut oil is one of the most popular fats used to make popcorn. Often used in movie theaters, it yields tasty popcorn that is very high in fat.
  • Kettle Corn - Kettle corn uses sugar and salt to give the popcorn its distinctive flavor. It was once made in cast iron kettles and in some places, like fairs and carnivals, still is made this way.
