Studio Portrait Terms for First Timers

Having a family portrait taken by a professional photographer is a common way of commemorating events like weddings and graduations. But there's more to the family portrait or head shot than just sitting down and getting your picture taken. Most photographers offer a wide range of photo packages and services that may need a little explanation for first timers. What follows are some commonly used studio portrait terms.

  • Boudoir - Pictures of a woman in sensual costumes that are meant to be a private wedding gift for their husband.
  • Portfolio - A collection of the photographer's work designed to give potential clients an idea of his or her style.
  • Poses - Before digital cameras were commonplace, photographers limited the number of pictures they would take by charging customers by the pose. These days, most studios charge a sitting fee based on a set amount of time with unlimited poses.
  • Proofs - A sheet of photo paper containing every shot the photographer took at a particular sitting. Proofs are used when selecting photos for a portrait package.
  • Props - Objects used to add an individual touch to a picture. Props can be anything from a hockey stick to a Bible.
  • Retouching - Once called "airbrushing" this digital process is used to remove blemishes and other imperfections on a head shot or other picture.
  • Sepia Tone - A chemical process that gives photos a yellowish look reminiscent of old fashioned pictures.
  • Sitting - Refers to the time spent actually getting the pictures taken as opposed to just talking with the photographer.
  • Sitting Fee - A fee which covers a photographers studio time, but does not include the actual photo package.

There are many reasons you might have a portrait, or professional picture taken. From wedding engagements to family photos, there are many occasions when you need that perfect print. When you get a professional portrait taken, you will go to a photography studio. You will then decide what kind of picture you want, such as a head shot for your portfolio. You could also take a glamorous photo in make up and costume, with a boudoir backdrop. Maybe you need a senior portrait for your yearbook or want a couples shot for holiday cards. You will work with a photographer who will set the camera angles and lighting. He will make sure your hair looks good and that you are dressed properly. You want to make sure you look the part, and that your personal style shows through. The photographer might pose you or give you a prop, or add other design elements to give the picture life. Because the camera has a strong flash, the photographer might airbrush the final copies to eliminate any blemishes that show up. You want to make sure your wedding, baby or family memories look their best. Whether you are taking an individual head shot or a group one, a studio can find something to fit your needs. Just be open and honest about what you want, and they can work with you to achieve your goals. If you visit a photo studio, you will be able to capture precious moments in time and enjoy them for years to come.
