Tips for Choosing Potato Chips
Potato chips are a fun, crunchy snack enjoyed by many. Whether you like popping them with sandwiches or eating right out of the bag, you have a huge selection of chips to choose from. Just head to any grocery store and an entire aisle is devoted to flavors ranging from BBQ to salt and vinegar. Here are some tips for choosing the best potato chips:

Tip #1: Avoid Chips with Partially Hydrogenated Oil
To cut down on unhealthy fat consumption, it’s a good idea to steer clear of all chips made with undesirable trans fats such as partially hydrogenated oil. This doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods if you see a “no hydrogenated oils” label. Be sure to check the total fat content, being on the lookout for non-hydrogenated, high mono-unsaturated oils containing no more than 10 percent saturated fat.

Tip #2: When in Doubt, Go Baked
The healthiest alternative is to purchase baked chips, which come in all sorts of flavors, such as hickory BBQ and sour cream and onion. Boasting 65% less fat than regular potato chips, these all-natural chip options feature no MSG, cholesterol and trans fats. You still have to watch the calorie consumption though. This doesn’t give you free reign to eat a whole bag in one sitting.

Tip #3: Buy Large Bags and Separate Into Smaller Bags
Sure, those little snack bags of potato chips look convenient for school lunches and all. But are they really cost effective? Heck no. In fact, you’re paying way too much per unit for that convenience, and you can easily achieve smaller portions by yourself. To get the most bang for your buck, buy large bags of potato chips, then portion them out into smaller snack baggies when you get home. Have them ready to go in your pantry for quick hands to grab when on the run.
