Private Club Terminology
Yacht clubs, gentlemen's clubs, fraternities, sororities, gym memberships and secret societies are all forms of private clubs. Private clubs offer members the opportunity to discuss, celebrate and participate in the various activities the club members find enjoyable or socially important. Some private club activities are cryptic, and known only to those who have met the requirements of membership and have been initiated; other private clubs only require its members to pay membership dues. This list of private clubs and fraternal organizations will help you understand different kinds of private clubs:

Gentlemen's Clubs: Clubs that were popularized in Great Britain and to a lesser extent, the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were founded exclusively for upper classed men with similar political affiliations, academic backgrounds or branches of military service. The term "Gentlemen's Club" is today commonly used to refer to strip clubs, which aren't private, but feature predominantly male clientele.

Yacht Clubs: Associations related to the sport of yachting and sailing. Yacht club members were historically comprised of yacht owners, and were organized in a similar manner to most private clubs, although the term is commonly used today to describe a commercial enterprise with more of a focus towards earning a profit rather than membership exclusivity.

Dining Clubs: Dining clubs are associations centered around dining out at different venues, either restaurants or members' homes. Dining clubs do not have permanent premises and have differing membership criteria, such as shared Alma Maters or religions.

Country Clubs: Private, closed membership clubs located in rural settings. Country clubs offer different recreational activities such as polo, golf, swimming or tennis.

Getting information about private clubs can be difficult because many of them conduct secretive clandestine operations that might even be held at classified, concealed locations. Other clandestine clubs are not as confidential, though, and you can get some basic information about them even if they are a little hush-hush about it and will not let you inside to look at intimate details until you are a member. You can find many personal secretive clubs with basic information listed in the online directory and on the Internet. When you contact the clandestine clubs, ask them how you can get more information about them. These personal clubs might give you access to business opportunities with other members once you have participated in secret initiations and have access to privileged info such as where the club's location is, who runs the organization, and what some of the hidden or sealed rules of the club are. Ask the hush-hush covert club if you can meet with a representative to discuss becoming a member and gaining access to restricted information that is unrevealed to the public. During your conversation, you should understand that they might be interviewing you, so be on your best behavior and try to come across as someone that they might be interested in sharing confidential information with. If they invite you to join their intimate club, ask them if they charge any undisclosed membership fees. While being a member of the exclusive club can give you some advantages, you have to be sure that you can afford the classified fees.
