Important Terms for Private Detectives

Private detectives can help individuals investigate cases, like domestic issues, cheating, background checks, and more serious criminal cases. Private eyes are essential for helping families or business owners find enough information to make essential decisions, like hiring an employee, or trusting a partner. If you are considering hiring their services, familiarize yourself with the terms below.

  • Skip Trace - This is the act of finding the location of different individuals. It can be to certify that biological parent is alive and healthy or locate another missing person. Skip tracers can also help in locating criminals that have skipped out on bail.
  • Ballistics - The study and science of projectile objects, like rockets, bullets, and other objects. This science focuses on the patterns, shape, and behaviors to help identify these objects.
  • Anthropometry - This is the science or practice of measuring the human face and body. This is a branch of physical anthropology.
  • Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures (TSCM) - This is a specialty field among many private detectives. It includes acts like sweeping a room for bugs, or checking for other electronic surveillance. Detectives can be licensed in these specialties.
  • Process Serving - This is the act of serving or notifying individuals with legal notice regarding cases that person may be involved in. Many PIs are licensed process servers, in addition to the cases they investigate.
  • Due Diligence - This term refers to the act of conducting an investigation on companies or individuals before entering into legally binding contracts with them. For instance, investigators commonly run background checks for criminal records, financial stability, and other information to certify the employee's desirability.

Many people who read mystery novels or hard-boiled fiction are interested in the lives of licensed private detectives. But few people know exactly what it takes to become one of these private eyes, or exactly what it is these men and women investigate. Few people know that private detectives must train for years before they can begin working for an agency, or set up a private investigation practice of their own. They must find a school to certify them and give them a license to investigate. Only then can they begin to investigate crimes and trace the identities of missing persons. And most people don't realize that private eyes are not always engaged in glamorous work. They spend a great deal of their time performing routine background checks and setting up security or surveillance equipment. They are often asked to record spouses cheating on their partners. They are also often asked to trace and recover petty criminals. They may, for instance, be asked to verify whether or not someone committed insurance fraud. They may also be asked to check up on someone who may have embezzled assets from a company. Only very rarely do they spend time tracing the whereabouts of notorious criminals who have skipped town. And, if these criminals have truly skipped town, they can often be difficult for investigators to catch. If you're still interested in learning more about how these investigators spend their time, you may want to contact someone who can certify that he or she is a genuine private eye.
