Psychiatrists can help people get back on track in their lives, providing counseling, medication prescriptions, and valuable advice for moving forward. Licensed psychiatrists are doctors who can prescribe medication for those in need, to deal with depression, mental illness, phobias, and other disorders. These professionals may have any number of clients, ranging in age from children to adolescents to adults. Some do have specialties, such as psychopharmacology or psychotherapy, as these areas may make them stand out and offer extra services. So what are the differences? Psychotherapy involves the treatment of mental and emotional disorders through various psychological techniques to relieve a range of symptoms and to create positive changes in behavior. Psychopharmacology involves the use of psychoactive drugs. Psychiatrists can offer many services for clients, such as therapy for eating disorders, addiction, marriage and family conflicts, and panic attacks. Some prescribe medication for anxiety and other afflictions, while others try out counseling first to deal with health issues like smoking cessation or substance abuse. Since only psychiatrists can issue medication and prescriptions, and not counselors or psychologists, many people with severe depression or other mental illness seek out these psychiatry doctors for relief. From anxiety stemming from religious affiliations to panic attacks to addiction, psychiatrists can be found in the phone book or online. Patients may also want to ask their primary care doctor for referrals to qualified psychiatrists in the area. The Internet is also a great resource for connecting with others in similar situations, through blogs, chat rooms, and the like. There may be support groups in the community led by licensed psychiatrists that can provide an outlet for those suffering from mental illness, depression, and anxiety.
