Psychiatry Terms Defined

Psychiatrists treat and provide medical diagnosis for patients suffering from mental distress. They look for the signs of mental disorders and can prescribe medications to help treat these conditions. Psychologists usually focus on counseling and providing therapy sessions. The following are many terms for disorders and treatments in the realm of psychiatry that you should consider.

  • Psychotherapy - A system of therapeutic and interactive treatments to help a person suffering from psychological difficulties. Psychotherapists provide counseling to patients and confront their mental health issues. Some psychiatrists may specialize in psychotherapy.
  • Organizational Psychiatrists - A field of psychology and psychiatry that focuses workplace societies. Psychiatrists help improve the well-being and performance of a company's staff.
  • Psychopharmacology - The study of drugs and their effect on human psychology. Psychopharmacologists develop drug treatment systems to help patients suffering from various mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder and many others.
  • Attention Deficit Disorder - Also called ADD or ADHD, a disorder that commonly is prescribed in children and is associated with reduced attention span. Psychiatrists can prescribe medications that help children deal with the disorder and focus better in school.
  • Bipolar Disorder - A mood disorder also known as Manic Depression. Bipolar patients exhibit extreme mood swings characterized by periods of depression and periods of hyperactive, manic activity.

Since only psychiatrists can issue medication and prescriptions, and not counselors or psychologists, many people with severe depression or other mental illness seek out these psychiatry doctors for relief. From anxiety stemming from religious affiliations to panic attacks to addiction, psychiatrists can be found in the phone book or online. Patients may also want to ask their primary care doctor for referrals to qualified psychiatrists in the area. The Internet is also a great resource for connecting with others in similar situations, through blogs, chat rooms, and the like. There may be support groups in the community led by licensed psychiatrists that can provide an outlet for those suffering from mental illness, depression, and anxiety.
