Quilting Terms to Know

If you are thinking of picking up quilting as a new hobby, there are a few things to know about the craft before diving in. To better understand some of the basics of quilting and sewing, familiarize yourself with the following terms and definitions.

  • Appliqué - This is the process of attaching a pre-sewn or pre-shaped piece of fabric to a background of fabric or existing quilt in order to create an image, pattern or design.
  • Bias Square Ruler - This is an important tool for working with quilts, so you'll want to shop for a quality product. A bias square ruler allows you to create perfect block squares for quilting by hand or machine.
  • Frame - A frame is a tool that holds the quilt or fabric taut for stitching by hand. A frame is often made of lightweight wood or plastic.
  • Hoop - This is another useful tool that is important to shop around for. The hoop will hold pieces of fabric together, such as the front, back, and batting, while you are working to sew them together.
  • Sashing - You may see this term in a pattern or template if the quilt is meant to be large. The sashing will frame the blocks of the quilt to enlarge the overall area.
  • Template - As a beginner, a template will be especially useful. A template allows you to cut out any shapes or patterns required for the quilt so that you may use them to cut out your fabric pieces. Templates are usually made of thin paper.
