Popular Quilting Materials and Supplies Terms

Quilts are a favored means of crafting for many people. The finished product can be both functional and beautiful. Gathering materials and supplies, and selecting a pattern, can be a complicated process even for experienced quilters. Familiarity with common terms related to quilting materials can make a trip to the fabric shop easier.

  • Batting - The insulating material that is sewn into a quilt. It is sandwiched between the top and backing material.
  • Binding - Long, narrow strips of cloth used for lining the edges of the quilt. This is typically one of the last pieces added to a quilt.
  • Rotary Cutter - A tool for quickly and efficiently cutting through multiple pieces of fabric. A rotary cutter resembles a pizza cutter, although the blade is considerably sharper. This eliminates the need to cut each individual piece by hand. These can be found at most fabric shops.
  • Rotary Mat - A mat used in conjunction with a rotary cutter. These ensure that the blade does not damage the surface being used for cutting, and helps keep the blade sharp.
  • Design Wall - A means of laying out all of the patches of the quilt in the intended pattern. This allows a quilter to see what the completed quilt will look like. A design wall can be cheaply made with large pieces of thin batting or another plain-colored material.
  • Notions - Accessories and supplies which aid in the design and construction of a quilt. The term is used for accessories for many types of fiber and textile arts. Notions are tools which are not strictly necessary, though many find them very useful.
