Popular Quilting Materials and Supplies Terms

Quilts are a favored means of crafting for many people. The finished product can be both functional and beautiful. Gathering materials and supplies, and selecting a pattern, can be a complicated process even for experienced quilters. Familiarity with common terms related to quilting materials can make a trip to the fabric shop easier.

  • Batting - The insulating material that is sewn into a quilt. It is sandwiched between the top and backing material.
  • Binding - Long, narrow strips of cloth used for lining the edges of the quilt. This is typically one of the last pieces added to a quilt.
  • Rotary Cutter - A tool for quickly and efficiently cutting through multiple pieces of fabric. A rotary cutter resembles a pizza cutter, although the blade is considerably sharper. This eliminates the need to cut each individual piece by hand. These can be found at most fabric shops.
  • Rotary Mat - A mat used in conjunction with a rotary cutter. These ensure that the blade does not damage the surface being used for cutting, and helps keep the blade sharp.
  • Design Wall - A means of laying out all of the patches of the quilt in the intended pattern. This allows a quilter to see what the completed quilt will look like. A design wall can be cheaply made with large pieces of thin batting or another plain-colored material.
  • Notions - Accessories and supplies which aid in the design and construction of a quilt. The term is used for accessories for many types of fiber and textile arts. Notions are tools which are not strictly necessary, though many find them very useful.

Quilting materials and supplies are sold through various distributors across the country. As you may know, quilting is a type or method of sewing that is done with various fabrics. Essentially with this method, two or more layers of fabric are stitched or sewn together. This results in a thicker cloth, quilt, or end product, which offers more padding. The practice of quilting has been around for centuries now, and many patterns are often used with all sorts of fabric colors. When it comes to quilting supplies and materials, many are commonly referred to as notions. These are basically buttons, hooks, and other items. Many of these are often found in sewing or quilting kits, which are marketed in stores and online. Other supplies and materials used in this practice are metal hoops, sewing machines, patches, cheap hand tools, and hooks to hang framed quilts. There is a certain system or routine to sewing and quilting efficiently. As you may know, batting is the cotton filling that is typically used in quilts. It provides warmth and makes the finished product more padded. The craft of quilting incorporates infinite designs, and uses the batik method for applying colored patterns or dye colors to fabrics. You can learn a lot more about quilt supplies and textile materials like silk, linen, and cotton on the web. In fact, there are various online stores that discuss sewing machines, quilt patterns, baby fabric options, and various notions like thread for this craft.
