Quilts are usually handmade, sewn together in many different patterns, from scraps of fabric. They are typically double layered, with an under-layer, and the patchwork or decorative over-layer. Between these two layers of fabric, batting is inserted for padding, and adds extra warmth if it is going to serve as a blanket or a bedspread. Today, quilts are woven for many different purposes including as a group bonding activity, to express a story, as a form of artwork, and for practical uses, such as clothing or a bed set. However, early quilting, dating back all the way to the first century, was originally padded blankets woven or tied together with yarn to create added warmth for the sleeper. Throughout the 19th century, pattern quilts became an art form practiced by aristocratic or wealthy women. The craft was also a form of story telling practiced by middle and lower class women. Quilts served the dual purpose of keeping the new baby warm, and preserving family history. Many antique quilts are decorated with intricate patters and bright colors that cannot be found in the story. Today, we have developed patterns to help sewers create their first quilt. Stores sell blocks of fabric, thread, sewing materials and kits to help the buyer create a baby blanket, comforter, duvet and more warm materials. These kits usually come in different sets, containing material choices between cotton and wool, as well as some decorative choices, like ribbon or different thread colors. Research online to find out more about the art of quilting. You can find directions on how to create a new bed spread, a quilted wrap, and other handmade items. You may also be able to find some these items on sale if you want to do any online shopping!

Decorative, antique, and commemorative arts and crafts can be enjoyed by anyone no matter what their age or skill level. You can easily buy thread, ribbons, yarn, and batting to make your own handmade project. There are guides available at stores that can give you step by step instructions on what you need to do. Wraps come in many different patterns and can be excellent to keep you warm on cold winter months. Stores will have employees that will give you tips on how you can make better crafts. Of course, if arts and crafts are something you haven't got the talent for you can always buy a quilt from a store. The price will often vary depending on if it was handmade and the type of patchwork that was involved. Shops will have cotton choices available that were hand sewn or woven. If you are about to start a new project but aren't sure where to start, look for a class offered at a store near you to learn tips and tricks for bedding. Finding others with the same hobby can be an excellent guide if you need help later on finding the right pattern or just need some advice on how you should go about your project. Stores can be found in a phone book on online but will have different days and times that they're open.
