Various kinds of racks are used for storage. In most cases, a rack is used to reduce the amount of space, especially floor space, taken up by the item being stored. For example, a bike rack may be constructed to completely lift the bike off of the floor. This is sometimes considered to reduce wear on tires as well as space. Modern flat screen televisions are often mounted on a wall. Stands may also be used for hanging coats and outerwear or storing umbrellas. Most modern racks are made of metal, but wood is still fairly common. Galvanized metal is perhaps the most common material, especially for items intended to be used outside. Wooden pallets are often used in warehouses to store items so they can easily be moved with a forklift truck. Shelves are also generally made of metal, with wood being most common in household furniture such as bookshelves. Manufacturers sell racks to supply companies and retailers. Bulk purchases of racks are common in the warehousing and shipping industries, and discounts are normal. Suppliers may also sell racks cheap to the general public. Retailers may also buy storage solutions in large quantities. In many cases, these are built in, and it is not uncommon to see a wall mounted shelf or display units that are fixed in place. The use of racks and stands is ubiquitous and often goes unnoticed.
