Popular Automotive Radiator Terms

Radiators are complex but important parts of automobiles. They regulate a vehicle’s temperature. Following are some common terms associated with auto radiators.

  • Belt – An engine belt is used to power the blower. An electric motor is sometimes present, too, to help distribute the air. This air is needed to cool off the radiator’s cores.
  • Blower – This is the fan that blows air at the cooling cores.
  • Coolant – Auto coolant is actually a combination of water and antifreeze. It is necessary to keep your car’s engine from overheating. Coolant is fairly cheap, so it is easy to keep a spare bottle nearby in case the tank starts to run low.
  • Heater Core – Hot coolant from your car’s engine is used to heat air. The heater pumps this air into the vehicle for passengers’ comfort.
  • Hoses – These tubes are used to move coolant and air around your vehicle. Hose clamps keep these parts in place.
  • Oil Cooler – Oil coolers are only present in automatic transmission vehicles. This part prevents the engine oil from getting too hot.
  • Radiator Cap – This is the cap underneath the hood of your car. The radiator cap keeps coolant inside. It also keeps the radiator pressurized, which allows the system to operate more effectively. If the coolant becomes too hot or begins to boil, the radiator cap can also aid in relieving pressure. This can prevent the coolant from harming the entire system.
  • Thermostat – This device is important for helping to regulate the engine’s heat. Once the engine is warm, the thermostat opens. This allows for quicker heating, which is especially beneficial in cold weather.
  • Water Pump – The water pump actually deals with the radiator’s coolant. It moves the coolant through the system. Remember to keep spare coolant handy in case the system begins to run low.

Automotive radiators are necessary for the performance of your car's engine. Without a properly working radiator, your car will overheat, ruining the engine. It is, therefore, important to make sure that you choose auto repair shops that can diagnose problems and find solutions that will keep your car's engine running well. Internal combustion engines create a lot of heat. Even a small leak in the cooling system can cause serious problems. When you contact an auto repair shop, you should make sure they have plenty of experience performing radiator diagnostics. It's easy to miss a leaking valve or loose fan, so you need to hire a professional who understands how auto parts are designed to work. If you have enough experience with performance engines to make the repairs yourself, then you will simply need to find an auto shop that has new or used parts. It is usually easy to purchase engine, radiator, and oil filter parts for new cars. Older models, though, aren't always so simple. People who own older cars should, therefore, contact salvage shops that might have the right designs that they need to keep their cooling systems in top shape. Of course, not all electric fans, water hoses, and coolants have the same level of quality. You can make sure that you choose high quality parts by looking for online reviews. Some wholesale and retail companies allow their customers to leave comments about the repair and aftermarket products that they sell. You can also search for websites that focus on auto repair support.
