Popular Ranch Terms

Ranches serve both as traditional animal farming businesses and tourist attractions that focus on the sale of unique vacation packages. If you are looking to buy a unique getaway package, a trip to a ranch could be a doorway into the cowboy experience. The following are some common ranch terms to become familiar with to enrich your experience.

  • Guest – A guest ranch, also known as a dude ranch, is a type of ranch property used primarily as a tourist attraction. Some guest ranches are designed to be vacation spots. However, a lot of guest ranches have either been converted from a functional ranch or are fully functioning ranches that take on guests during certain times of the year.
  • Hunting – Many ranches allow hunters to come hunt native animals or have hunting areas where they bring in animals for recreational hunters. A ranch that caters to hunters might feature animals native to the land, or they might buy exotic animals for hunters.
  • Cattle – A cattle ranch is a type of farm where cattle are raised for food and leather production. Cattle farms are typically many acres in size to provide living and grazing space for the cattle. In addition to raising cattle, ranches with more acreage may do farming work to produce feed crops or raise other types of animals.
  • Rangeland – Rangelands are large, open land areas that grow native vegetation. Ranches either need their own rangelands for animals to graze on, or they need to have access to a common rangeland. Most large scale ranches have a private lot of rangeland.
  • Wrangler – A wrangler is a professional animal handler who often works with horses. Wranglers are often involved in training horses for use on a farm or sale to horseback riding enthusiasts.

Ranches are typically large farms that are located in the Western part of the United States. These sections of land are traditionally used for raising animals like cattle. In fact, people in the ranching industry often buy and sell livestock for ranching purposes. Since the late 1800s, there have been other types of ranches that cater to tourists and guests. These are better known as dude ranches, and they are typically for people on vacation. With some renovating, large pieces of property or land are converted into dude ranches, which allow visitors and vacationers to acquire a western or ranch-like experience. This means riding horses, interacting with wildlife and cattle, and even working on a farm to some degree. There are a number of associations and reservations involved with dude ranches in the United States. As you may know, there are also hunting ranches. These allow guests to hunt on a designated property or piece of closed-in land. Wildlife grow naturally in these vacation ranches in order to be hunted. In order to visit a dude ranch or experience a hunting reservation, you may have to take a trip out west. There is a lot to be learned about dude ranches online. In fact, this is a great way to find out more regarding jobs at these ranch locations, ranch property for sale, and horses and cattle used at guest ranches. Online there are official websites that pertain to these ranch locations, as well as specifics on amenities and pricing.
