Popular Range and Oven Service and Repair Terms

The range in a home or restaurant is probably the most used electric or gas appliance. Typically, purchasing a range and oven combo is a major investment and if the appliance needs to be fixed or maintained, the costs can add up in a hurry, especially with respect to industrial or commercial models. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the range and oven service and repair industry, it is important to understand the terminology associated with it. Below are several terms to be familiar with when researching range and oven repair services.

  • Range - A range is a heating appliance with burners and one or more ovens, formerly primarily heated by solid fuel. Many modern ranges are now powered by either electric or gas. Typically, they are free standing rather than permanently fixed in one location.
  • Dual Fuel Stove - A dual fuel stove is a stove with an electric oven paired with a gas cook top. The advantage is that gas generates more BTUs, while electric heats more evenly.
  • Conveyor Oven - An oven designed to carry food product on a moving belt into and through a heated chamber. Conveyor ovens are popular with pizza restaurants.
  • Convection Oven - A convection oven is an oven which has a fan that shortens cooking time by circulating hot air uniformly around the food.
  • Kiln - A kiln is a commercial or industrial furnace or oven for burning, baking, or drying something, especially one for firing pottery or baking bricks. Kiln temperatures can reach over 2500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ranges and ovens are vessels used for cooking. They are found in kitchens, both residential and commercial. Ovens usually have a pull-down door where you place food like casseroles and cookies inside, set to a certain temperature. On top of the oven is a stove, which is used for sautéing, grilling, boiling, and frying food on pans. Stove tops are also ideal for warming soup in pots. They usually feature a hood or vent of some kind, to dissipate the steam that is created from cooking and baking. You can purchase new or used appliances, depending on your budget and needs. Manufacturers sell to wholesalers, retailers, and other distributors, but they may also sell direct to the public. In addition to sales, most major appliance dealers offer repair, troubleshooting, and installation services for industrial, commercial, and residential stoves. Technicians visit customers' locations to repair their appliances on site, providing parts replacement, fix-it services, or maintenance. Ranges and ovens come in a range of styles and colors, as well as price ranges. Some are basic models, while others perform lots of different functions at the touch of a button. Types of ovens include continuous, ceramic drying, batch, curing, and convection. Some are meant for commercial or industrial uses, such as in restaurant kitchens, and feature a conveyor belt system. Choose from electric or gas when considering which type of appliance to get. Stove tops also vary, from those with grates to those with smooth tops. Some have digital readouts while others have traditional dials. Some ovens are not meant for food at all, such as walk-in ovens and ceramic drying kilns, and are used to harden pottery items. The very first coal oven was invented back in 1833. But before that, 1735 saw the invention of the first enclosed stove.
