Key Terms Relating to Record Labels

When you are looking for a record label to sign your band, there are a variety of labels to choose from. The most basic decision to make is to go with a major or indie label. An indie label generally gives more artistic freedom, but may not have the resources to offer a lucrative deal. A major label has more access for marketing and promotion. Become familiar with the following key terms before sending out your demo to potential record labels.

  • Commissioned Music - Music that is created for an intended purpose. A record label may ask a specific band to contribute a song for a movie soundtrack. This is an example of commissioned music. Make sure to read the details of the contract to understand how the royalties will be paid out for CD sales.
  • Protected Music - Any music that is under copyright law. If you are sending a demo to a record label, it is a good idea to have your music copyrighted.
  • Artist Manager - A person who promotes the band and looks to increase awareness of the music.
  • Rights Owner - This is a term that refers to the person or company that owns the copyrights to the music. An artist that is signing a contract usually gives up the rights to the label. This may also mean that they have the ability to use your music for any purpose with or without your consent.
  • Publisher - A person or company that attempts to find outlets for a band or artist's music. This is a way to market a song and to increase royalties.
