Key Terms Relating to Record Labels

When you are looking for a record label to sign your band, there are a variety of labels to choose from. The most basic decision to make is to go with a major or indie label. An indie label generally gives more artistic freedom, but may not have the resources to offer a lucrative deal. A major label has more access for marketing and promotion. Become familiar with the following key terms before sending out your demo to potential record labels.

  • Commissioned Music - Music that is created for an intended purpose. A record label may ask a specific band to contribute a song for a movie soundtrack. This is an example of commissioned music. Make sure to read the details of the contract to understand how the royalties will be paid out for CD sales.
  • Protected Music - Any music that is under copyright law. If you are sending a demo to a record label, it is a good idea to have your music copyrighted.
  • Artist Manager - A person who promotes the band and looks to increase awareness of the music.
  • Rights Owner - This is a term that refers to the person or company that owns the copyrights to the music. An artist that is signing a contract usually gives up the rights to the label. This may also mean that they have the ability to use your music for any purpose with or without your consent.
  • Publisher - A person or company that attempts to find outlets for a band or artist's music. This is a way to market a song and to increase royalties.

Record labels are businesses that typically sign all sorts of major bands, artists, and musicians. A record company will do this in order to get the indie musician or band started in the business, and make a profit from their talent as well. Some common genres labels deal with are rock, hip-hop, country, pop, and Christian rock music. When a record label deals with a new musician, the artist or band must sign a contract. Not only does this ensure that they have a business agreement, but several stipulations will be involved as well. There are major record companies located around the world. Some of these professionals deal with the American music market. While record labels have to listen to new songs or demos from potential bands and musical artists all the time, they also have to produce and promote new CDs. Once albums start selling, musicians can make royalties off of the songs for a long time. In general, major record labels use a great deal of media to promote their indie pop stars, hip-hop bands, and Christian rock groups. Furthermore, depending on the contract each professional signs, he or she may have to perform in specified locations and on various tours around the world. By surfing the internet, you can learn about record labels, music bands, and how contracts work in general. As you may already know, a wealth of information is at your fingertips regarding record contracts, song royalties, and music label company locations on the web.
