Recreation Center Terms and Definitions

Recreation centers of all sizes are located across the country. As you likely know, these public facilities are provided for sports, outdoor fun, and daily fitness routines. Depending on the community you live in, there may be several recreational centers and public parks to enjoy. It just depends on what indoor and outdoor activities or sports you prefer. Take a moment to review these helpful terms and definitions, which can broaden your knowledge of recreational centers.

  • Department of Parks and Recreation – This state department oversees and regulates parks and centers that are provided to the public. They can be contacted if you have any inquiries regarding laws, rules, or regulations that apply to state recreation facilities.
  • Equestrian Trails – Often found in state or national parks, these designated trails are for individuals who enjoy horseback riding. The trails are designed and regulated specifically for horses.
  • Dog Runs – These are large, fenced-in areas for dogs to exercise. Dog runs are sometimes offered at parks and recreation facilities. However, often the animal has to be with the owner and kept on a leash.
  • Sports Recreation Center – This is an indoor facility that may also offer outside grounds for specific sports. Typically these community centers provide basketball courts, swimming pools, gymnastics equipment, and sports supplies to the public.
  • Senior Fitness Centers – These are gyms or indoor workout facilities that are specifically for elderly individuals and senior citizens. They commonly offer cardiovascular exercise classes, weight lifting machines, and swimming pools.
  • Marine Park – A park that offers lake or sea access to the public. These parks can be used for recreational purposes, which incorporates swimming, scuba diving, boating, and water sports.

    Recreation centers provide the public with an opportunity to enjoy fitness and continued education programs through low cost facilities. In most areas, they are run by local parks departments, and many centers feature both indoor and outdoor activities. These sites are available in many community centers, providing a place where those of all ages and all income brackets, can access health equipment, classes and swimming facilities. The activities that are available will vary by facility. Some of the most well-equipped recreation centers will offer everything from a full gym to pool access for members. In addition to having open times during which the public can use the fitness equipment at their leisure, most also offer classes on swimming, dance, aerobics and other special interest fitness areas catered toward the general public or specifically for youth or senior community members. As these centers are typically sponsored and operated by the parks department or other non profit groups, use of the facilities is offered for free, or at a rate that is much lower than most private gyms. Local government websites are some of the best sources for more information on local play areas and recreation centers. In addition to finding information on membership rates, visitors will also see a schedule of upcoming events. Not only are classes typically available, but parents may find after school programs for their children. They may also find sports leagues that utilize their facilities. Recreation centers are designed to be a place in the community where all are welcome to enjoy physical activities or learn more about their hobbies of choice.
