Recreational Vehicle Repair and Service Terms to Know

Recreational vehicles are fun to take on a cross-country trip or just camping for the weekend. Some people live in theirs full time, while others use them primarily as a a vacation vehicle. Park your RV at a campground during summer, or travel to warm states during the cold winter. Whatever your choice, you can bet that these recreational vehicles will require repair and service from time to time. This can range from simple oil and filter changes and dent repair to more in-depth services such as plumbing or electrical fixes. Parts like toilets, hinges, valves, coils, and switches may need to be replaced occasionally to keep the RV in working order. Here are some typical definitions you’ll need to know when it comes to recreational vehicle, camper, motorhome, and trailer repair and service.

  • Amp - Amp or, amphere, is the electric current unit of measurement. When at an RV site, the hookup will specify the maximum number of amps that is supported.
  • Awning – A sloping piece of canvas mounted over the door-side of an RV to provide protection from the sun and rain.
  • Electrical Components – Any supply items pertaining to the RV’s electrical system, such as voltage boosters, regulators, power outlets, receptacles, and chargers. Many things within an RV also operate on battery power. Batteries need to be changed out occasionally as needed, from major vehicle batteries to clock radio batteries.
  • Winterizing – Before putting your RV in storage for the winter after traveling all summer, you’ll need to properly winterize it, which entails extensive cleaning of all furniture and draining of all water tanks. It may also include replacement of engine fluids. Trailer parts like an awning or ladder may be removed for easier storage when not in use.

If you are preparing to take your recreational vehicle on a trip, then you might want to take it to an RV repairing and servicing shop to make sure that it is fit for travel. There are several RV repairing and servicing shops listed in your online directory and on the Internet. Some people find that it is difficult for them to decide which company they should choose because there are so many to choose from. If you follow these guidelines, though, you should find a shop with the repair parts, trailers, and accessories that you need for your travels. When you first contact the companies, you will want to determine how much experience they have by asking them how long they have been in business. Those with several years of experience should have more motorhome and camper repair parts that you can use. Ask them if they have work on items like electrical products, roof covers, accessories, clubs, wheels, battery chargers, pop up tents, furniture, and other gear that you might want to haul with you during your travels. If you are interested in used recreational vehicle part sales, then ask them if they have these products available. Be sure to get info about the manufacturer so that you know the items you buy are high quality. While you want to be sure the company you choose has the repair services that you need for your RV and trailer, you should also think about prices. Ask them to supply you with written price quotes that are easy to compare.
