Common Refigerator and Freezer Repair Terms

In most homes, the refrigerator and freezer are a workhorse that helps to provide low cost cold storage for food and beverages. And, most of the time, these reliable appliances quietly freeze and refrigerate and we don't give them much thought. But the moment your refrigerator or freezer needs a service call for a fix or repair, we realize how much we take these kitchen helper for granted. If your kitchen appliances need service or repair, you might find yourself in some pretty unfamiliar territory. And between the cost of part, labor and the service call, you might wonder if getting a new fridge is the better option. So before you call a commercial service to come out and fix your fridge, familiarize yourself with some of these common repair terms.

  • BTU - Stands for British thermal unit and is used to measure the amount of energy it takes to heat one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.
  • Compressor - The single most important part on your refrigerator, this device circulates the refrigerant, usually ammonia or nitrogen, to create cold air. If this part breaks down, your kitchen activities will grind to a halt.
  • Gasket - This is just a technical term for the rubber parts that hold a seal together. If the food in your refrigerator isn't getting cooled properly, this could be the problem.
  • Thermostat - A device that registers changes in temperature. If your refrigerator door isn't sealing properly, the thermostat will collect inaccurate information and food may not get refrigerated properly.

Refrigerators and freezers are complex major appliances that need the proper repair when broken. For this, many consumers turn to technicians skilled in these areas. Refrigerators, major household kitchen appliances that keep food cold and preserve fresh fruits and vegetables, come in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors. The same is true for freezers, which are complementary major appliances that keep food frozen and produce ice. They are both kept at a constant temperature to provide enough cold air so as not to spoil food. You'll typically find refrigerators, commonly called fridges, sold as a combo unit with freezers. Some are side by side, while others are top and bottom. They each have their advantages and drawbacks; it all depends on the needs of the consumer. Some are industrial strength, such as sub-zero freezers, meant for restaurant or commercial use. Consumers can purchase new and used freezers and refrigerators in retail stores or online wholesalers. So many things can go wrong with these units over time. Perhaps the cooling system is broken and food is thawing due to low temps. Or maybe the unit is leaking due to internal damage. Service technicians skilled in fridge and freezer repair can help fix this damage. Many times, repair techs work at retail stores and are on hand for consumers that need to book an appointment for service. Other professionals own their own small and large appliance repair business and work independently. These contractors can provide anything from installation and parts replacement to troubleshooting and door replacement for gas and electric appliances. The modern refrigerator replaced the icebox, which was widely used in homes before that to keep food cold. The very first commercially available refrigerators came about in the late 1920s.
