Religious goods stores sell supplies that are used in religious services and home worship. The following eight terms describe goods that are can be found at religious supplies stores.

  • Vestments – Apparel worn in the practice of some Christian religions. Vestments worn by priests, nuns, and altar boys and girls are an important part of Catholic religious practice.
  • Tabernacle – A locked container kept in a Christian church that houses the Eucharist bread used in communion services. Tabernacles are often very ornate, decorative containers.
  • Pyx – A small container used in some Christian traditions to store the Eucharist to bring it to sick people or individuals that can't travel to receive communion.
  • Tallit – A Jewish prayer shall that is usually made from wool. A tallit has fringed and tied edges. It is often given as a bar mitzvah gift.
  • Shofar – A ram’s horn used as an instrument at temples during Jewish religious services on the holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
  • Ceremonial Candles – An item used in a church, temple, or in the home. Ceremonial candles are often adorned with religious symbols and imagery. Devotional and votive candles are types of ceremonial candles used as part of prayer rituals.
  • Prayer Cards – A small card with a religious image on one side and a prayer on the other side. Prayer cards are used in the Catholic tradition and are often given at wakes or funerals in remembrance of the deceased.
  • Religious Jewelry – Jewelry that features religious symbols or has a religious function. Religious jewelry is a popular gift item. Examples of religious jewelry include crosses, rosaries, and medallions.
