Terminology Related to Resins
Resins are sticky substances that exhibit viscosity and the ability to harden, making them useful for many applications. Resins are used in adhesives, floor coatings, fiberglass production and various additional applications. You might encounter some of the following terms when looking for resin products.
Thermosetting Resins - Resins that cure and harden under heat, and cannot be remolded once hardened. Some examples include epoxy, polyester and polyurethane. These substances harden through a chemical reaction and have superior strength.
Thermoplastic Resins - Resins that can be repeatedly melted and remolded, changing shape with the addition of heat. Some examples include polycarbonate, polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride.
Synthetic Resin - Resins that have properties similar to organic resins, such as viscosity and the ability to harden. Epoxy and polyurethane are two common ones. Organic resins, on the other hand, are derived from plants.
Epoxy Resin - A clear polymer resin that is used extensively for adhesives, coatings and composites. Epoxy adhesive is used for high-strength adhesion and has a high resistance to heat and chemicals. It is used as a coating to provide hardness to appliances, and as a primer for paint.
Varnish - A substance that provides a clear, hard coating for wood furniture, flooring and other products. Varnishes generally contain a resin such as polyurethane, amber, benzoin or rosin.
Fiberglass - A polymer resin that is reinforced with fiber. The substance can be molded and shaped into strong structures, such as boats.
Resin Casting - A method of casting using synthetic resin in a mold. The resins used for casting include epoxy, acrylic and silicone resins.
Mastic - A resin derived from the mastic tree and used for chewing gum and flavoring throughout the world.
