Terms that Every New Restaurant Owner Should Know

Opening a restaurant can be exciting. Everything is fast paced and you get to meet a lot of people. Behind management doors, you will have to know the tricks of the trade and the terminology associated with running a professional kitchen. It takes more than just being a good cook, so here are a few key terms that every food business owner, cook and restaurant equipment and supplies dealers should know.

  • Backorder – This is when you order products, such as restaurant equipment, food or kitchen supplies, that are no longer in stock, but are shipped immediately upon availability.
  • Menu – This is a list of beverage and food tems that are offered to customers and that are related to the concept of your restaurant.
  • Casual Dining – A restaurant that has a casual dress code and atmosphere. Food on the menu are priced moderately for casual dining.
  • Front of the House – A reference for the front portion of a restaurant where customers are allowed, such as the entry area, restrooms, dining room and conference rooms. The host or hostess is usually in charge of this area.
  • Full Service – A restaurant that has waiters/waitresses that cater to customers’ needs.
  • Single Service Utensil – Kitchen tableware that is disposable. These are used for carry-out food and one-time or one-person usage. These are popular because they're cheap.
  • Demographic Surveys – Surveys that are conducted to determine the age, race, gender, income, profession, etc. of your restaurant’s customers, allowing you to better cater to them with your prices and menu items.

If you are a caterer, you will need transportable commercial stoves for cooking, and even a refrigerated truck to transport your food.
