Retirement homes and senior living communities provide care and housing for the elderly who are unable to care for themselves.
The term retirement home, however, is used less these days. Companies and facilities may talk about a life care community or an assisted living community. Or a senior housing development. Regardless of the term, however, all of these are communities in which elderly people live.
They vary, however, in the amount of support provided. Some senior communities are simply apartment blocks or housing developments that rent only to individuals over a certain age. Others are hospices that care for those in declining health. Independent living facilities tend to fall between the two, providing small apartments and a continuum of care from almost nothing to assistance with all aspects of life. Many of these facilities also provide short term housing to allow younger caregivers a break. Some may have senior centers that provide services to independent elderly and also adult day care. Most residents, however, are there long term.
Most residents pay their own way, but some services can be paid for by Medicare. Nursing homes that also provide rehabilitation often allow for a convalescent eligible for Medicare to receive benefits. Medicare also pays for hospital services for those in old age.
Communities range in size from entire neighborhoods to a single house. Most long term care facilities have nurses on full time staff. Nurses may provide specific medical treatment or assistance intended to allow a resident to continue in their apartment as long as possible.
