Retirement and Life Care Homes Terms to Know

As the population ages, researching and finding a life care or retirement home can be a daunting task. In order to have a better, more comprehensive understanding of the different life care and retirement facilities available, it is important to understand the terminology associated with this type of care. Below are several popular terms associated with the retirement home and life care industry.

  • Charge Nurse - The charge nurse plans, directs, and evaluates the overall nursing care and functions in a particular nursing unit or during an assigned shift. They often coordinate the activities of the unit and direct, organize, and assign work to the nursing staff.
  • Independent Living - Independent living is a residential living setting for elderly or senior adults that may or may not provide hospitality or supportive services. Under this living arrangement, the senior adult leads an independent lifestyle that requires minimal or no extra assistance.
  • Congregate Housing - Similar to independent living except that this type of community usually provides convenience or supportive services like meals, housekeeping, and transportation in addition to rental housing.
  • Continuum of Care - Care services available to assist individuals throughout the course of a disease. This may include independent living, assisted living, nursing care, home health, home care, and home and community based services.
  • Respite Care - Services that provide people with temporary relief from tasks associated with care giving such as, in home assistance, short nursing home stays, adult day care.
  • Hospice Care - Hospice programs are available to help terminally ill individuals live their remaining days with dignity. These programs can assist the family or other designated caregiver in making the patient as comfortable as possible, and assistance is available around the clock, seven days a week.

Retirement homes and senior living communities provide care and housing for the elderly who are unable to care for themselves. The term retirement home, however, is used less these days. Companies and facilities may talk about a life care community or an assisted living community. Or a senior housing development. Regardless of the term, however, all of these are communities in which elderly people live. They vary, however, in the amount of support provided. Some senior communities are simply apartment blocks or housing developments that rent only to individuals over a certain age. Others are hospices that care for those in declining health. Independent living facilities tend to fall between the two, providing small apartments and a continuum of care from almost nothing to assistance with all aspects of life. Many of these facilities also provide short term housing to allow younger caregivers a break. Some may have senior centers that provide services to independent elderly and also adult day care. Most residents, however, are there long term. Most residents pay their own way, but some services can be paid for by Medicare. Nursing homes that also provide rehabilitation often allow for a convalescent eligible for Medicare to receive benefits. Medicare also pays for hospital services for those in old age. Communities range in size from entire neighborhoods to a single house. Most long term care facilities have nurses on full time staff. Nurses may provide specific medical treatment or assistance intended to allow a resident to continue in their apartment as long as possible.
