Popular Terms About Retirement Communities and Homes

Those facing retirement age may choose to live in a retirement community or home, to forgo the hassle of maintaining a large house and lawn. These communities are ideal for those who are still quite independent but who want all the care and maintenance of their property to be taken care of by someone else. These communities and homes may also feature quick access to medical care, such as with visiting nurses, ideal for those with physical disabilities. Here are some popular terms pertaining to retirement communities and homes.

  • Age Restricted Community – A community of homes where the residents must be at least of a certain age. The most common age restriction is 55/
  • Amenities – The perks that come with living in a retirement community, such as lawn mowing and snow plowing, plus recreational activities, on-site medical assistance, health clubs, golfing, meals, and more.
  • Assisted Living – A home or apartment complex that provides living space for older adults who can live largely on their own but may need regular assistance with medical and personal care. Nursing staff may visit on a daily basis, or there may be an on-site nursing presence 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Hospice – A type of care that involves maintaining the comfort level of a terminally ill patient. This can take place at a facility or within the patient’s home.

Older adults with disabilities and retirees often need extra care. To meet their needs, they may live in retirement communities and homes. This type of housing is for retirees, the elderly, and senior citizens who can't live alone any longer due to medical or physical issues. Some may have a disability that keeps them from living alone. They can also be for those who don't work any longer and need a social outlet that living in their own home just can't provide. There are many different types of retirement communities and homes. Some are cozy village-style neighborhoods where everyone has his or her own separate living quarters. Some are very large houses or apartments that resemble hotels in that everyone lives together but in their own rooms. Retirement homes usually offer many recreational opportunities, such as golfing, swimming, and fitness centers for the active senior. Some act more as nursing homes or assisted living facilities, where medical treatment and care is offered round the clock, catering to those with Alzheimer's, for example. Qualified nurses can offer regular medication and monitoring at the community facility to those who need it. Retirement communities are often restricted to certain age groups. Generally, there are no children on or around the facility. But there is plenty of activity at retirement homes, in the form of regular meals, Bingo and other games, exercise classes, art classes, and other amenities. Health and wellness is a big priority with retirement homes, whether such homes resemble condominiums, townhouses, hotels, or apartments. Retirees and senior citizens can get referrals to a reputable retirement home, senior housing, or hospice service from their local community senior center or medical doctor.
