Ribbons Terms to Know

You see them adorning gifts, packages, hair styles and numerous other items. Ribbons are pieces of colorful fabric that are often used in arts and crafts to create bows and trimmings. They are usually sold at craft stores in a variety of colors and patterns. However, sometimes it can be difficult to choose the right ribbon, as there are different kinds. Below are some common terms associated with ribbons.

  • Grosgrain – A special type of ribbon. They have a matted finish and their texture is a little rougher than some of the other types, such as silk ribbons. They are often used for crafts, such as making bows to wrap gifts or put around a Christmas wreath.
  • Satin – Satin is a very fine, thin fabric that is soft to the touch. It is often sold single or double faced, though single faced is cheaper than double faced. This kind of fine ribbon can be worn as a wedding dress accessory or hair decoration.
  • Organza – A specialty type of cloth that is very thin and almost transparent. Organza ribbons are sometimes sold with stripes running down their edges, or patterns embroidered on them. They are often used in wedding ceremonies. They were once popular as adornments for the hats of Victorian ladies.
  • Tulle – A fabric very similar to organza, but a little stronger and thicker. Like organza tulle is very thin and it is the same material that ballerina tutus are made from. Tulle ribbons can be embroidered with glitter for elegant effects and are often used as an accessory for wedding dresses.
  • Printed Ribbons – Satin and grosgrain ribbons can have patterns printed onto them. These patterns can often be customized according to what the customer wants.

Ribbons aren’t just for tying back hair. They are perfect for dressing up any craft or gift. They have an endless number of uses. Simple gift-wrapping, for instance, can often look bland and incomplete, but a satin ribbon will add a finishing touch. Not only will it look beautiful, you can add a ribbon well suited to the recipient for a more personalized gift. Brides and wedding planners should also have a sufficient supply of ribbon. To dress up your wedding with ribbons, try tying a bow of velvet ribbon around the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets for an unforgettable look. Or use a satin ribbon tied around a centerpiece for an unexpected touch. Ribbon embroidery is another beautiful way to use ribbons. Such embroidery can be used on jewelry or household decorations. Ribbons have no shortage of colors, fabrics and patters, so whether you plan to use them in your hair or to dress up some curtains, there’s sure to be a ribbon for you. Satin and organza, are lighter materials that won’t be as bulky as other ribbons. Grosgrain, on the other hand, is a heavier fabric. Characterized by a ribbed appearance, grosgrain is the material that is often used for blue-ribbon awards. Wire ribbons create prominent bows that hold up well. Ribbons can also have unexpected details, such as a lace trim or a print. You could even use fabric paint or stamps to customize your ribbons with a pattern you create. You can even choose the colors of ribbon to match your school colors or sports team.
