Riding Academy Terms
A riding academy is a school where both beginning and advanced equestrians can learn about caring for and riding their horse. Riding academies offer lessons along with stable boarding options. The lessons can vary from beginner to advanced skills, depending on the rider's ability. The following terms are often associated with a riding academy or school.
Riding Arena – Sometimes also called the lessons arena, this is where the instruction will take place. It is usually a flat area covered in sand or packed dirt and surrounded by a fence. The rider will ride their horse inside the arena under the watchful eye of the instructor. Trail riding is also a common at riding academies. Riders will ride horses on trails to learn about controlling the animals on different terrain.
Gaits – Horses can perform several gaits. A walk is the slowest horse gait, followed by a trot, a canter and a gallop. For competition purposes, a rider must be able to master all the gaits.
Horseshoe - These metal shoes are affixed to a horse's hooves to protect them from wear and tear. A farrier is properly equipped to handle the process of nailing a shoe to a horse's hoof. Routine grooming, along with proper maintenance of shoes is necessary for a happy and healthy horse. Horse grooming includes bathing, brushing, picking out debris from their hooves and feeding. New horse owners can learn the basics of grooming their horses or ponies at a riding academy.
Showing – Equestrian competitions are often called shows. Two of the most common are dressage and jumping shows, both of which require extensive lessons before the rider is ready to enter the competition.
Dressage – A type of equestrian competition where the horse and rider are judged on the quality of the horses' gait and the rider's horsemanship.

A riding academy is an equestrian school or ranch that aids people with horseback riding lessons. These types of training academies can be found in different parts of the United States, and they also commonly have stables to house and groom horses. For individuals who already have a horse, an academy can assist the animal with proper instruction, as well as teach the owner how to properly ride and jump the animal in shows. While these schools have beginner lessons for new riders, they also offer advanced instructions.
Riding academies and equestrian boarding camps generally offer trails for horses to practice simple walking, cantering, and trotting. This can help prepare the animal and rider for shows. Sometimes, a clinic or grooming specialist is available at riding academy locations to better assist various horses and pony breeds. While attending these equestrian schools, horseback riders learn how to lead, feed their animal, position the bridle and saddle correctly, and maintain horseshoes so the horse is able to walk trails and jump properly. It can take some serious time and effort to learn what you need to know about horse dressage, cantering, and jumping properly in equestrian shows.
If there are any riding academies in your town or city, you should take the time to get in touch with them to learn more about horse training options, local stables, advanced riding, and boarding clinics for ponies. If you are a horse owner, the more you know, the better off you will be with effectively caring for your horse.
