Are robotic systems cheaper than a traditional labor force?
In many cases, yes. Though it will initially cost more to install a robotic system for assembly, over the years these systems will cut down on operating costs considerably. Instead, they simply perform the jobs they need to do, and while they occasionally need to be repaired, even their maintenance costs are cheaper than the alternative. What are the limitations of robotic systems?
While they can replace labor forces, there are limits in what robotic systems can do. They can only do the jobs they are programmed for, and since they lack basic intelligence they can provide little or no oversight. Therefore, human operators are still needed to make sure that the robots are doing their jobs properly.

What is the purpose of artificial intelligence? Because of the limitations of robotic systems mentioned above, many engineers are trying to design robots that have some sort of artificial intelligence, or A.I. that can help guide their actions. These robots would be able to adapt to conditions and work outside of their basic programming functions since they could make intelligent decisions.
