Common Rock and Mountain Climbing Equipment Terms

Rock climbing is an extreme sport that offers enthusiasts the challenge of scaling a mountain, rock wall or boulder. While climbing a mountain may be for more advanced climbers, individuals can begin by learning in a more controlled environment. Gyms and other indoor facilities will have walls that individuals can use to learn the fundamentals of climbing. This is an opportunity for novices to become familiar with the equipment and gear used in this sport. Equipment includes harnesses, helmets and ropes. Once individuals become comfortable climbing, they can take on a mountain and experience the thrill of reaching the top.

  • Belay - A belay is a system that will prevent a climber from falling and includes rope, anchors and belayer. The belayer is the person who manages the rope.
  • Aid Climbing - Aid climbing is when climbers use gear to stand on or pull oneself up via devices that are attached to a fixed position and is used to make upward progress.
  • Free Climbing - Free climbing is when someone only uses their hands and feet and does not rely on any gear or equipment when climbing. A rope may be used for safety, but not to make progress up a mountain.
  • Carabiner - A carabiner is a metal loop that features a spring loaded on one side that connects to a harness and other climbing equipment.
  • Cambered Sole - A cambered sole is found on rock climbing shoes. This shoe features a down-turned sole that allows for more precise placement on a rock.
  • Harness - A harness is a belt and leg-loop system that will attach to a climber. Harnesses often include a seat for when repelling off a mountain.
