Important Terms about Roofing Materials

Sooner or later, the roof of your home will probably need to be repaired or even replaced altogether. Whether you plan to hire a contractor or buy supplies to build a sturdy steel roof by yourself, you should be aware of the terms and concepts that often correlate with roofing improvements. Understand and familiarize yourself with some of the more important terms that relate to roofing supplies.

  • Roof Pitch – The slope of a roof, expressed as a numerical grade. A roof with a steep slope is sometimes called a pitched roof. A low slope roof is one with a slope of more gradual build.
  • Shingle – Made of various materials, these are rectangular tiles assembled in overlapping fashion on the roof, used for aesthetic purposes and to protect the home against environmental damage.
  • Wood Shingle – The oldest type of shingle, this is valued for its rustic look, but it can be flammable and require regular maintenance.
  • Asphalt Shingle – A common, inexpensive type of shingle that comes in two varieties: organic and fiberglass. The fiberglass variety is more fire-resistant than the paper-based, organic kind. Because it tends to be easily damaged by sun and heat, this type is often recommended only in cooler areas.
  • Slate Shingle – Made from rock, this is a type valued for its fire and water resistant qualities.
  • Metal Roofing – Roofs made from metal, often steel or aluminum, are extremely durable and require little maintenance. However, they tend to pose serious installation difficulties.
  • Built-Up Roofing – Used with low slope roofs, this is a type of roofing that employs multiple layers of materials and sealants to guard against water damage.
  • Wallboard – Large panels used to construct walls. It is also called drywall.

Whether you are building new construction or replacing the covering of an existing structure, there are many different types of roofing solutions. Once you have determined the type of roof you need, there are also decisions to be made about tiles and shingles. Some homeowners like the look of wood shingles while others prefer slate. A rubber and asphalt covering may be the most inexpensive route to take. This type of covering can be applied fairly quickly and can be easy to repair. If you are constructing a new home then you will want to consult with your contractor. You will more than likely be working within a budget. Material and labor can get expensive. You will also have to factor in the cost of supplies. You will need someone to help guide you through this process. You may be unfamiliar with choices of materials that are available. You may have questions like; what metal is better, steel or copper? What kind of insulation is best for my home? Does the job include the installation of aluminum gutters? Is wallboard the same as sheet rock? Does my structure require a pitched or flat roof? If you're persistent, you may be able to find the bulk of your supplies at wholesale prices. Any price break you can get will help, especially if your building plans include steel or other expensive metals. Whatever your needs are, this is an important part of the construction and maintenance of your home. A little thought and money spent now will save you time and frustration later.
