Shag carpeting was popular in the 1970, but many today see the thick carpet as a nightmare to clean. Hand knotting is most prevalent in Oriental rugs.
Tufted – This is the most common type of carpet. The pile is attached to a backing material, such as woven canvas pads, to provide durability. Since more are made by machine, the are easily available and cheap.
Oriental – A rug that is been created in one of the following locations: Asia, Turkey, Iran, India, the Caucasus, Cyprus, or Maghreb countries. These started to appear in Europe after the Crusades, but they were used as wall hangings because they were considered too precious to be laid on the floor.
Persian – Most of these rugs are produced in Iran today, but carpet weaving can be traced back centuries to ancient Persia. There are three types of Persian floor coverings: Farsh, Qalicheh, and Gelim.
