Types of Rugs

Rugs are placed in many rooms throughout the world. They are soft underfoot and can help protect the floors in the area from stains. If you are considering purchasing a new carpet, below is some information on the different types.

  • Woven – This type of rug is created using a loom. Multiple colors of yarn and extensive patterns are common. Because of the amount of time and craftsmanship needed for these rugs, woven is the most expensive style.
  • Needlefelt – These carpets are manufactured by taking advantage of electrostatic attraction that occurs between certain synthetic fibers. This produces a very durable carpet. It is often found in high traffic commercial areas such as doctor’s offices or hotel lobbies.
  • Knotted – Once called weft cut-loop, knotted rugs are made by combining yarn with a second thread, which is attached to a warp by one of three knots. One is these knots are called shag. Shag carpeting was popular in the 1970, but many today see the thick carpet as a nightmare to clean. Hand knotting is most prevalent in Oriental rugs.
  • Tufted – This is the most common type of carpet. The pile is attached to a backing material, such as woven canvas pads, to provide durability. Since more are made by machine, the are easily available and cheap.
  • Oriental – A rug that is been created in one of the following locations: Asia, Turkey, Iran, India, the Caucasus, Cyprus, or Maghreb countries. These started to appear in Europe after the Crusades, but they were used as wall hangings because they were considered too precious to be laid on the floor.
  • Persian – Most of these rugs are produced in Iran today, but carpet weaving can be traced back centuries to ancient Persia. There are three types of Persian floor coverings: Farsh, Qalicheh, and Gelim.

Rugs make a great addition to any area. If you have a shag carpet that is one solid color, you can purchase a small throw rug to add a burst of a different shade. Classic rugs are also useful on hardwood floors and can be placed in the center of a room underneath a coffee table. If you have fancy rooms in your home you may consider purchasing a Persian rug or antique Oriental rug to enhance your place. Persian rugs have intricate patterns and almost look like works of art. Oriental rugs have braided ends and can add some flair to any hardwood floor. Area rugs that cover shag carpets or floors can be round or rectangular. Rugs can be made of both natural and synthetic fibers. Wool rugs are also popular due to their durable nature. If you have a contemporary looking pad, you may want to consider a modern rug in a bright color or funky shape. Small throw carpets can be used to keep your home clean. Runners and mats can find places near the front door, kitchen, bathroom or any place where wet feet or muddy shoes may touch. Companies sell both indoor mats to place right inside of a door as well as outdoor mats for a porch. Make sure to keep your carpets clean. You can get them professionally steamed or throw smaller carpets in the washing machine. If you are in need of a new carpet, there are plenty of discount outlets where you can find designer carpets at cheap prices.
