Sawmill definitions

Traditionally, a sawmill is a place where lumber logs are brought to be cut into usable wooden boards or planks. They accomplish this by using a variety of saws and trimming processes. Once, wherever timber forests were, there were sure to be small sawmills. Now most sawmills have massive yards where most of the process of cutting the wood is computerized. However, there are still small sawmills who usually make specialty boards, such as a certain type of hardwood and furthermore, there are now portable sawmills that every homeowner could use.

  • Portable Sawmill – A small sawmill developed in the 1970's for personal use by landowners. They can be transported on-site, and while they are not often used to produce commercial lumber they can produce specialty hardwoods and construction logs. They often have band saws, but do not have circular saws.
  • Band Saw – A long vertical saw with one side sharpened for cutting. Sawmills often use large band saws for ripping lumber. Types of band saws used are the head saws for the initial cuts, into very rough timber and then resaws, slightly smaller saws which help shape the grain of the cut.
  • Ripping – A cut that goes with the grain of the wood.
  • Circular Saw – A blade made into a circle with a sharp edge all around. Sawmills use circular saws to reshape the logs into boards after the initial cuts are made.
  • Chainsaw – A portable saw that is often used to cut down the trees brought to the sawmill, but cannot make the finer cuts necessary when working with lumber.

Saw mills are typically facilities that process timber in order to cut whole trees or large logs into boards and planks of wood. These mills actually date back centuries, but modern times have brought along more advanced equipment, including portable saws, edgers, and more. It is common for these facilities to deal with an array of hard and soft woods. Various band, chain and circular saws are utilized in mills to cut and split timber into usable pieces. It is crucial for all blade edges to stay sharp in order to work properly and yield better results. Countless manufacturers use planks, trim, and cylinder-shaped lumber for various products. It is therefore important that a number of saw mills stay functioning all over America. As you may be aware, these facilities generally make use of mobile or portable saw units, blade accessories, hydraulic equipment, as well as personal mini tools for processing hard wood. This way lumber and logs can be cut into vertical planks, trim, and boards that are sold by the yard. Although many large saw mills process all kinds of timber every day in this country, there are some people who purchase portable wood cutting equipment in order to work with lumber at home. You may be able to learn more about local saw mills, lumber processing, and the tools used for it by contacting professionals in your area. This does not take much time or effort. Once you discover whether or not there are saw mills in your town or city, you can get in touch with them to get more details.
