Sawmill definitions

Traditionally, a sawmill is a place where lumber logs are brought to be cut into usable wooden boards or planks. They accomplish this by using a variety of saws and trimming processes. Once, wherever timber forests were, there were sure to be small sawmills. Now most sawmills have massive yards where most of the process of cutting the wood is computerized. However, there are still small sawmills who usually make specialty boards, such as a certain type of hardwood and furthermore, there are now portable sawmills that every homeowner could use.

  • Portable Sawmill – A small sawmill developed in the 1970's for personal use by landowners. They can be transported on-site, and while they are not often used to produce commercial lumber they can produce specialty hardwoods and construction logs. They often have band saws, but do not have circular saws.
  • Band Saw – A long vertical saw with one side sharpened for cutting. Sawmills often use large band saws for ripping lumber. Types of band saws used are the head saws for the initial cuts, into very rough timber and then resaws, slightly smaller saws which help shape the grain of the cut.
  • Ripping – A cut that goes with the grain of the wood.
  • Circular Saw – A blade made into a circle with a sharp edge all around. Sawmills use circular saws to reshape the logs into boards after the initial cuts are made.
  • Chainsaw – A portable saw that is often used to cut down the trees brought to the sawmill, but cannot make the finer cuts necessary when working with lumber.
