Popular School Supply Terms
As students enter high school and college, a different set of supplies is needed. Gone are the days of crayons and construction paper, as these students need a more specialized set of supplies for continuing in their education. Here are some popular school supply terms.
Flash Cards – This is a set of cards, usually index cards, that are used for memorization in a question and answer format. It is used for learning by students, tutors and teachers in the classroom or in private study. They are often used as a learning drill for things like historical facts, vocabulary and mathematical formulas.
Graphing Calculator – This is a programmable, hand held device that can solve simultaneous equations and plot graphs. The student can create personalized scientific or engineering applications because it accommodates several lines of calculations at the same time. In secondary education, many teachers require this instrument.
Correction Fluid – This is an opaque formula that is usually white that is used to mask errors in writing or calculations. It is applied to paper and once it has dried it can be written on. Though most students will be doing word processing on notebooks and desktops, this formula facilitates last minute corrections.
External Hard Drive – This is a device that stores and retrieves digital information. They are a secondary storage device and offer flexibility and independence. They are a great option for people who use notebook computers in the classroom because they can be unplugged and stored when not in use.
Textbook Covers – These are thin, fabric covers that are used to protect textbooks throughout their use. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and are stretchable, allowing them to adjust to different book sizes.
Education in our society is formalized. The supplies required by children and young people attending school and college have changed in recent times, but also stayed the same.
The use of computers in education has made it almost essential for college students to have a laptop. Most high school students also have one. Computer software, therefore, has become an important element. However, there is still a strong requirement for other supplies, and if anything it is increasing as more and more professors ban laptops from the classroom.
Most school supplies are purchased from specialists or from office supply stores. These supplies include notebooks, pencils and erasers. Calculators and crayons are also important. College students are likely to acquire stationery along with text and reference books from the campus bookstores. Younger kids may also obtain educational toys and play materials. Very basic supplies may be sold in supermarkets and educational toys are often sold in toy stores.
Schools themselves, especially elementary schools, often acquire bulk quantities of basic materials, especially paper and crayons. Needless to say, teachers require stationery and pens.
Supplies and learning resources vary according to the age of the children, with elementary and high schools having very different requirements. Parents who choose to home school also need to buy extra items, such as teaching books and curriculum materials. Many companies offer a discount on larger quantities.
School supplies, in addition to learning resources, can also refer to classroom furniture such as desks, chairs and blackboards. Although the idea of a paperless school, like a paperless office, is out there, physical stationery and notebooks are unlikely to go anywhere.
