Popular Private School Terms

Private schools can be great options for many students. They often allow greater specialization, and may teach a certain set of religious or cultural values in addition to traditional academic material. Familiarity with different terms can assist parents and students in selecting the best private school for their needs.

  • Independent Study - A program which allows students greater freedom than traditional programs. Working closely with a faculty supervisor, students may design and carry out a unique and independent program of study.
  • College Prep - A curriculum designed to prepare students for college. Many private high school students complete this type of program.
  • Magnet School - A school designed with a specific focus, such as arts or sciences. Magnet schools attract students gifted in a given area because they allow students to get a deeper, more specialized education than they would at more generalized schools.
  • Charter School - A school which falls between public and private schools. Local laws vary, but most charter schools are run outside of the larger public education system. They may be run by an independent board of directors.
  • Boarding School - An educational academy where students live on site during the school year. These may be co-ed facilities, or cater exclusively to boys or girls. Many a geared toward high school students, though some elementary boarding schools exist.
  • International School - A school geared toward students from other countries. These schools expose students to a wide range of cultures and languages, and allow international students to learn in an environment with other students that share their culture.

Although the price tag is higher than public schools, private schools offer an advantage to students in frequently smaller class sizes, religious education, boarding, and uniforms. Private schools, privately-owned educational institutions, differ from public schools in that tuition is required. Students typically wear uniforms, as opposed to street clothes. Private schools can operate at the charter kindergarten, elementary, middle, high school, and college levels. Religious education, such as Catholic or Jewish, is a way of life for students and teachers alike. Some such schools have direct affiliations with churches and parishes, which may be located on the same lot. Teachers in private schools teach a variety of academic subjects to children, from math and spelling to chemistry and science. Higher level schools like colleges and universities offer more specialized courses such as engineering, multilingual classes, and nursing. Many private academic universities and colleges offer online classes and degrees, which can prove beneficial to those who don't have the time to attend classes in person during the day. Whatever specialty you choose, such as sports medicine, international business, or biology, private schools can help you attain that degree you've been reaching toward. On the other end of the spectrum, there are private preschools as well. The price is payable in full, or in monthly installments throughout the year. In some private schools, boys and girls are segregated. Sports may be offered for children, as well as multilingual instruction, art, and extra curricular activities. Boarding schools allow students to live on a campus, away from home. People can learn more about all types of private schools by asking school guidance counselors.
