Popular Scrapbook Album Terminology

Scrapbooking is a fun, unique and crafty way to preserve and protect personal photographic memories and traditions. Dedicated individuals who regularly partake in this hobby use special arts and crafting supplies and materials to help them achieve their desired results. Here are some popular terms related to scrapbooking.

  • Acid-free – Referring to crafting supplies used to preserve memories that have a pH balance of over 7.0, which is considered acid-free. Most paper is initially acid-free but after it is treated, buffered or bleached it may become more acidic over time. All plastics are by their very nature acid-free, though care must be taken when using certain plastics around photos.
  • Archival Quality – This is a commonly used term to describe materials that are durable, permanent and unchanging. Acid and lignin-free items are often archival quality, but as with most things, the composition of materials can be compromised over time.
  • Bone Folder – This is a tool that is used to press a crease or line. It makes molding and folding much easier and provides a clean line. Bone folders were originally made of bone, but now they can be found made of plastic.
  • Cardstock – This is a type of thick paper that is sturdy, durable and ideal for scrapbooking. Cardstock comes in different colors and weights.
  • Matting – This is a technique that is used to frame or border pictures. It is usually made from acid free material and provides a setting for the memorabilia. Matting can be done using cardstock or can be done digitally.
  • Hinge Album – This is a plastic strap that is inserted into albums to help them expand as images and accessories are added. This has become necessary as digital photography has increased the availability of pictures.

Scrapbook supplies has become a popular industry. A special rose pressed between the pages of a book or a favorite yellowed letter stored in a top drawer once served as traditional reminders of a treasured event or memory. While people have always enjoyed saving items that recall a personal or family memory, specialized albums have taken the business of photo preservation to a new level. Scrapbooking is as much about the supplies as the memorabilia. Often, albums consist of one or two photographs glued onto decorated papers, picture frames and three dimensional accessories. These pages are a form of visual storytelling. For example, a page may chronicle a memorable vacation with a photo pasted on shell paper and bordered with real shark's teeth. Women are the predominant buyers of scrap booking supplies and material. Individuals want to preserve family history, chronicle children's growth and preserve memories. Teenagers enjoy marking milestones in a tangible fashion. Organizations also use scrap book format to preserve events and accomplishments. Albums provide a creative way of displaying pictures and memories. Scrapbook supplies can be purchased at a variety of locations. Specialty stores dedicated to the hobby, carry a wide selection of products. Craft and hobby stores also usually dedicate a couple of aisles to papers, stamps and other relevant items. Online stores also sell unique, themed media such as photo frames and cut-out collections. Additional supplies may include scissors leave patterned cuts, glitter glue and stickers. Words and letters for labeling pictures and titling pages are also popular.
