Screen Printing Terms to Know

Screen printing, also known as serigraph or silkscreen printing, uses stencils to create images. Often used to create graphic tee shirts, silkscreen printing is a cheap way to manufacturer large amounts of product cheaply. Below are some terms to know.

  • Discharge Inks - These inks are used to create light-colored areas on dark cloth. They do this by removing the ink from the cloth. However, they can be difficult to control and cannot be used for precision printing.
  • Four Color Process - A four color process uses four screens, each with a different color, to create the full spectrum of color needed for prints. Cyan, magenta, black, and yellow ink is used.
  • Gloss - This paint is applied over the ink to supply a shiny, clear layer on a tee shirt or other printed material.
  • Screen Printing Presses - There are three types of machines used to make screen printing: flat bed, rotary, and cylinder. While rotary machines are the most common type of equipment used, flat-bed machines are less expensive to use.
  • Pre-Press - This is the process used to create the image on the screen. Emulsion is applied to the silk of the screen and parts of the emulsion is removed to create a stencil.
  • Fill-Bar - This piece of equipment is used to force ink into the exposed cavities of the screen. The fill-bar resembles a squeegee.
  • Photo Emulsion - This screen printing technique is used to supply highly detailed images. Once the screens are created, they can be used to create thousands of prints.

Screen printing companies can customize products of all kinds, from shirts and hats to uniforms and jerseys. This printing technique involves pressing ink through a mesh screen onto another object, such as a T shirt or other textile material. A variety of equipment and supplies are used in the process, such as squeegees, adhesive sprays, ultraviolet machines, presses, and dryers. Also called silk screening, other supplies used in this process include flash units, laser alignment systems, and automatic presses. Digital printing is an alternative to the screen printing method. Skilled professionals operate the screen printing machinery to provide the best possible image transfers. They use manual or automatic processes to serve residential, commercial, or industrial purposes. Equipment used in the screen printing process can include stencils, screens, frames, photosensitive material, and ink. This early method of printing has a long and varied history. It was first used by the Chinese nearly 2,000 years ago. Interestingly, they used human hair to form the screen, utilizing a variety of leaves to make shapes. When the Japanese starting doing screen printing, they used woven silk instead of hair, thus creating the name “silk screening.” Today, screen printing manufacturers have access to the latest technologies in processes, supplies, and machines to create images on T shirts, hats, banners, hoodies, bags, and more. Such businesses can also use various designs and embroidery to cater to customers' individualized needs. Those interested in purchasing screen printing equipment and supplies can go online to perform research or contact providers directly for more information.
