Screw Definitions
There are many different types of screws. The following terms are used for the most common screws:

Wood screw: As their name suggests, wood screws are designed to hold wooden pieces together. The threaded end of the wood screw is sharp so that it can easily be driven through wood. The come in flat, pan, or oval heads.

Concrete screw: Also called masonry screws, concrete screws are made from carbon steel and are used for fastening materials into concrete. A hole has to first be drilled into the concrete using a hammer drill before the screw can be added. They either use a Phillips flat head or a hex washer head. Often, concrete screws can be recognized because of their bright, almost blue color.

Lag bolt: A type of screw similar to the wood screw, but much larger, lag bolts are used to hold together heavy loads. They are commonly used to help support heavy timber beams and can come up to 15 inches in size.

Eye screw: The eye screw is very distinctive because of its looped head design. This screw is made to fit into the wall with its head still showing, allowing objects to be hung from its head.

Double-ended screw: These screws with two ends are used to fasten a joint together. Because the double-ended screw has no head, both ends are inserted into the material. They often have large wood screw threads on one side, and smaller machine screw threads on the other.

Hex cap screw: Also called a hex bolt, the hex screw is a machine threaded screw that is designed to be driven into materials using a wrench, not a screwdriver. The threaded end of a hex bolt is blunt.
