Tips for Choosing Good Fish at a Seafood Restaurant
When you are selecting fish at a seafood market or restaurant, there are a few things to keep in mind. Refer to the following important tips to make the best purchase for your money:
Tip #1: Buy in-season fish. Purchasing fish that is in season will help to ensure that you are buying fresh food. Depending on your market area, most popular saltwater fish such as tuna or flounder has a very long season which is sometimes continuous. Freshwater fish will be more specific to your region, on the other hand. For example, if you are looking for bass in the United States' New England region, most species are best caught from the spring through the fall.
Tip #2: Check for freshness. When you are at the market, or selecting from your restaurant's display, there are a few things to look for. If a whole fish is on your list, check for lustrous, whole scales and bright pink gills. You can also smell the fish for freshness. Fresh seafood should not smell "fishy" but have a light, fresh sea aroma. When buying fillets, look for bright, firm flesh. Avoid any pieces with gapes or discoloration. Any darker flesh should be bright pink or red in color.
Tip #3: Store your purchase properly. Fresh fish often needs to be cooked and eaten within the first two or three days of purchase. Other varieties can be rinsed, wrapped, and sealed in an air-tight container for freezing. However, with some seafood, such as clams and mussels, freezing can negatively affect the flavor. If you are freezing molluscs, you should cook them rather than eating them raw.

Our restaurant will give you the premiere seafood dining experience in the area. We have fresh fish, shellfish, shrimp, crab legs and oysters. We also have angus beef burgers and steaks, along with a full liquor bar.
In this day and age, we have many fine food selections to choose from. Seafood restaurants are just one small category of this—a very delicious category. These restaurants will generally offer tasty options of fresh fish captured directly from the ocean prepared in several forms of unique recipes. They also cater to different types of dining, from fine dining to a casual night out. You can spend a romantic dinner at a restaurant on the beach, enjoying oysters, clams, calamari or scallops. On the other hand, you can also visit the local lobster bar and grill, where it is usually a more casual environment, serving peanuts and beer for a side dish and beverage. If you stop by the local pier, you can usually find small restaurants serving fresh fish, lobster, and seafood buffets on weekend mornings. These small places have some of the best crab dishes on their menus that can be found anywhere! If you live in a costal town, make an adventure out of finding a new seafood diner to visit. Take a trip up the cost and hit the spot that seems the most appealing. However, if you are looking for a specific type of dish, try asking friends and family members if they have suggestions of places they have recently visited. Maybe that restaurant has the clam chowder that you would kill for! If you can't find a restaurant this way, check out restaurants on the internet. You can either search for a seafood bar close to you, or try and find one in the town where you and your family will be vacationing. Once you find a place that sounds promising, call ahead and make a reservation to be sure they have a table and a basket of fried shrimp waiting for you!
