Important Terms about Agricultural Seed Dealers

Agricultural seed dealers are often sought out by persons looking to buy seeds in bulk. Customers can include farmers who manage vast areas of land as well as persons who maintain relatively simple vegetable gardens. If you’re going to seek out the services of an agricultural seed dealer, you may be confused by the terminology employed in this field, so below we’ll define some of the key words you might encounter.

  • Seed – The embryonic form of a plant, frequently sold in packets. The immature plant is contained within a structure called a seed coat. One can buy seeds for a great variety of fruits and vegetables, and even trees.
  • Germination – The process in which the embryonic plant emerges from the seed and begins to grow.
  • Organic seeds - A type that has been produced through natural means—that is, without the use of artificial chemicals. In the U.S., these types of seeds cannot be legally sold unless they are certified by the National Organic Program (NOP).
  • Hybrid seeds – A type that results from crossing two different types of plants. Hybrid plants and trees are often healthier than so-called inbred types.
  • Heirloom plant – A plant belonging to a type of a certain vintage—usually at least fifty years old—that is grown through natural methods and is no longer widely available. They are popular among private gardeners interested in traditional farming and agriculture methods.
  • Agronomy – Another term for scientific agriculture, the use of crops and soils to grow a variety of foods. A person involved in this field is called an agronomist.

Wholesale agricultural seed dealers often sell fruit and vegetable seeds directly to farmers or gardeners with large plots. Others, however, might sell their sunflower, tomato, pepper plant, herbs, and grass to retail stores that then sell packets to gardeners. The types of seed carried by an agricultural dealer will often depend on what market the company focuses on. Since many of the suppliers focus on farmers, they carry seeds for soybean, alfalfa, and corn. A company that focuses on this area might not include exotic plants in its catalog. When looking for organic seeds, you might have to buy directly from a wholesale dealer that focuses on organic products. Although some suppliers have a small selection of organic options, few of them have a wide selection. Those that focus on this area of agriculture, however, can often supply you with a variety of seeds that you can use to grow organic foods. These “green” foods often sell for higher prices than those grow without using organic agricultural methods. They are, however, often more difficult to protect from disease. If you are looking for a company that sells bulk orders of fruit and vegetable seeds, then you can use the internet to locate those in your area. You can also look for companies located elsewhere. They can often ship bulk orders directly to farmers and gardeners at relatively low prices. This will help you save money by giving you discounted prices on all of the seeds that you need for your farm or garden plot.
